Why the Impact Awards?

The TECH Fort Worth IMPACT Awards were created to recognize early stage startup companies that are bringing innovative technologies to market that will positively impact our world. At the time, no such event was being held in North Texas.

TECH Fort Worth created the IMPACT Awards and held the first event in 2009 to showcase the entrepreneurial passion that is creating innovative solutions locally for problems that exist globally. In contrast to other awards for startup companies, the IMPACT awards is not a venture forum. In fact, the applicants are specifically told not to include return for investors or revenue forecasts, but rather they are encouraged to show how many lives they will touch and how they will make a difference in the world.

Three categories were identified – Environment, Community, Health – with three applicants in each category being called in to pitch to independent judges with backgrounds in the respective categories. The three Finalists were coached by the TECH Fort Worth team before pitching to the judges. A winner was named in each category and the winner disclosed at the IMPACT Awards Luncheon.

In 2014 the format of the event changed to better serve the needs of the North Texas entrepreneurial community. As “startup pitch events” have become more popular there are sufficient opportunities throughout the year for early stage startups to gain a forum. With that in mind, and given that many of the winners of the awards were typically TECH Fort Worth clients, the organization has chosen to showcase the innovative technologies of its client companies only.

The TECH Fort Worth IMPACT Awards recognizes client companies whose innovative technologies have made significant strides towards positively impact our world.

When are they held?

The TECH Fort Worth IMPACT Awards are held each year either the second or third of Wednesday in May. If you attended TCU or are an avid golfer who knows what “The Colonial” is then the date is easy to pick out. It is the week after the TCU Commencements and the week before the Colonial Open. If you know anything about Fort Worth you will understand that those days traffic can be a nightmare so we conveniently placed the TECH Fort Worth IMPACT Awards between those dates.

Who can attend?

The TECH Fort Worth IMPACT Awards is open to the general public but space is limited so reservation is recommended.

Where is it held?

Since its inception the TECH Fort Worth IMPACT Awards have been hosted by Texas Christian University (TCU) in the Brown-Lupton University Union at 2901 Stadium Drive, Fort Worth, TX 76129.

The Fifth Anniversary!

The 2013 TECH Fort Worth IMPACT Awards marks the 5th Anniversary of the event. Highlights this year included Keynote Speaker Jasper Welch of the National Business Incubation Association whose keynote spoke of the role of entrepreneurial support organizations to the economic development of local communities.

Congresswoman Kay Granger regretfully had to make last minute changes to her plans to attend this our 5th anniversary but sent congratulations via a video. In 1998 then Fort Worth Mayor Granger was instrumental in the formation of TECH Fort Worth which today hosts the IMPACT Awards. Current Mayor Betsy Price also forwarded her congratulations to the Impact Awards in a video.

The TECH Fort Worth IMPACT Awards has placed the spotlight on numerous companies that otherwise would not have a venue for showcasing their impact on society. We look forward to an even better 2014 TECH Fort Worth IMPACT Awards event.

2012

Four years later

The TECH Fort Worth IMPACT Awards continue to pave the way in recognizing early stage companies with innovative ideas that will impact the world.

This year’s Keynote was delivered by Doug Solomon, Chief Technology Officer of IDEO, an award winning global design firm. Prior to joining IDEO, Mr. Solomon was Chief Strategist at Apple and Palm.

“This year’s winners and finalists impressed the judges with their concepts, passion and optimism,” said TECH Fort Worth Executive Director Darlene Ryan. “These entrepreneurs are working to better our world and the opportunity to shine this spotlight on them is gratifying.”

Making an Impact

The 2011 TECH Fort Worth IMPACT Awards Luncheon was held on Wednesday, May 18, 2011. Keynote speaker Sam Gilliland, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sabre Holdings, told the luncheon crowd at Texas Christian University that “TECH Fort Worth’s mission is very complementary to our own, and we’re pleased to join forces with like-minded people who are also passionate about bringing new innovations to market to make a difference in people’s lives.”

Five time Emmy Award-winning journalist and local FOX4 News personality (and self professed technophile) Steve Noviello was emcee of the Impact Awards event.

2009

The year it all started

The idea was simple. Reach out to the community to identify small companies that had technology that would impact the world. Create three categories that matter most. Have the companies pitch to judges with a background in the categories. Then have some fun.

We never quite understood how much work this actually took! We had 26 companies apply for the awards and spent countless hours working with the 9 finalists in perfecting their message. It was a lot of fun.

Thank you to our community partners and sponsors for easing the way.
